In sixties our design office developed projects of the first domestic open-type ship (“Poltava” type), the world first merchant ship with gas-turbine propulsion system (“Parizhskaya Kommuna”), the first domestic large bulk carrier of 35 800 TDW (“Rigoletto” type, 1966). The whole series of ships of this type (total 22) was constructed for export.

At the same time the “Chernomorsudoproject” began to use scale modelling and block construction. The first mock-up of engine room was manufactured at 1:20 scale, then we changed to 1:10 scale.

In the late sixties the USSR impetuously developed the space research program. And in 1968 the “Chernomorsudoproject” in co-operation with other research institutes made the design of a spaceflight support ship “Akademik Sergei Koroliov”. The ship was built at the Chernomorsky Shipyard.

At the same time we designed the first transport ships with integrated automation systems and propulsion plant being controllable by one man from the wheelhouse. One of them was the project of multipurpose ship, 13 500 TDW (“Geroyi Panfilovtsy” type, 1969), according to which 45 ships were built, mainly for export.

The seventies are characterized by the development of interesting and complicated designs.

The Navy complex supply ship “Berezina” (1970) belongs to the most complicated designs developed in “Chernomorsudoproject”. “Berezina” is a maximum highly-mechanized ship with a complicated arrangement of articles traffic inside the ship, spaces for supply storage on board meeting all the requirements imposed to the combatant ship.

One of the most interesting design is a Ro-Ro ship of type “Captain Smirnov” having speed of 25 knots (1974). This is the most high-speed ship ever developed by us. The unique gas-steamturbine installation of 50 000 HP total power output was selected for ship propulsion. The series included four ships built at the Chernomorsky shipyard.

In 60-70-ties the major Buyers of the ships were as follows: Ministry of Maritime Fleet of the USSR, Ministry of Fishing Industry of the USSR, Ministry of Defense of the USSR.

Since 1980 the new Buyers appeared: Ministry of Oil and Gas, Glavnauka (Science Head Office). The designs of drilling ship for drilling the boreholes at shelf “Gasprom-1” (1982) and drilling ship for deep water exploration drilling “Glubina” (1986) were developed for them. More than 20 contiguous Ministries and Departments of the industry of the USSR took part in creation of these ships built at the Kherson

In 1981 the design office developed the project of new bulker, 52 700 TDW, (“Panamax”class), in which experience in operation of well-recognized bulkers (“Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya” type) was taken into account. In 1982 the ”Okean” shipyard proceeded to construction of the first ship “Khariton Greku” and in 1983 the ship was delivered to the Black Sea Shipping Company. From 1982 to 1994 26 ships were built, among them 16 – for export.

The design of a lighter-onboard ship (“Aleksey Kosygin” type) of 39 980 TDW, 82 lighters or 1460 TEU ISO-containers capacity. From 1983 to 1989 four ships were built at the Kherson shipyard.

In 1982 we completed designing of the unique ice breaking/transport ship of 9 700 TDW with diesel-electric power installation for Arctic. In 1987 the first ship of this series “Vitus Bering” made a transpolar voyage by passing the North Sea Route without the ice-breaker and then to the Antarctic Continent with a team of winterers and goods for research stations. Five ships were built from this design at the Kherson shipyard. Later on these ships took an active part in the Antarctic and Arctic expeditions. The ships of “Ivan Papanin” type with diesel-electric power installation became a continuation of the above series of ships.

In 1983 the design office was charged with designing of the refrigerated cargo ship (7620 m3 capacity) for Ministry of Fishing Industry of the USSR. The ship was intended for taking-over the fish products from the ships operating at sea, for delivering supplies, fuel, water, etc. Since 1982 28 ships have been built at the 61 Communards’ shipyard, 15 of them – exported for Laskaridis Shipping Co. Ltd. (Greece). The last ship of the series is named after the project manager of the design – ”Designer Knysh”.

Multipurpose refrigerated cargo ship for carriage of bananas, fruit, vegetables, packaged cargoes and standard 20 and 40 ft containers was designed as well. The design was developed within short terms, documentation was delivered to the 61 Communards’ shipyard and in 1998 the ship was delivered to the Buyer.

In late 80-ies the idea of multipurpose transport ships with prolonged navigation period in northern latitudes and in the Far East was conceived. The Ministry of Maritime Fleet charged the “Chernomorsudoproject” with designing of timber/packaged cargo ship (ab 7000 TDW), ice class “OE” (as per USSR Maritime Register of Shipping) under patronage of the Sakhalin Sea Shipping Company. The Classification Design was developed and approved in the end of 1989. The ship of unrestricted service area was intended for carriage of timber cargoes (round and sawn timber packed, large diameter pipes, ISO containers of 8-9,5 ft. height, as well as bulk cargoes for service in northern latitudes (to -30C). In 1994 the first ship “Ramon Aboitiz” was built at the Kherson Shipyard and delivered to Philippine Buyer who ordered three such ships more.

In the beginning of 90-ies KHALID FARAJ MARINE SHIPPING ordered the ships for carriage of packaged cargoes, different vehicles, standard 20 and 40 ft containers, long-size cargoes, equipment on roll trailers, motor vehicles, ref. containers. The design was developed to meet the requirements of the RMRS Rules. In 1995 and 1996 the first ship “SONDOS” and the second ship “MOSA” were delivered to the Buyer by the “Okean” shipyard.

Since 1995 “Chernomorsudoproject” has become a joint stock company. In 2000 the “Chernomorsudoproject” was granted the International Quality Certificate ISO 9001 by Germanischer Lloyd.

In 1993 by the order of Norwegian company Bona Shipping the “Chernomorsudoproject” S.A. developed the Classification design of double-hull Aframax tanker (83000/105550 TDW) for carriage of oil and oil products.

By the order of Greek company “AVIN” the design of tanker (Kriti Amber type) of 45000 TDW was developed for carriage of oil, oil products and caustic soda. 6 ships were built from 1994 to 2001.

The tanker was designed with double bottom, double sides and underdeck tanks missing only in way of upper deck CL, without longitudinal bulkhead in the cargo tank area, with smooth-wall cargo tanks to comply with the requirements of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping Rules, and then it was reclassified to comply with the requirements of the Lloyd’s Register.

In 2000 the contract for designing of multipurpose dry cargo/timber carrier (6800 TDW) (16553 and 16553M Designs) was signed between the Russian Shipping Company “LAM” and “Chernomorsudoproject” S.A. The ship was single-screw, single-deck, three-hold, with minimum freeboard, central cargo hatches, with superstructure and ER arranged aft, with forecastle, quarterdeck, transom stern and bulbous bow. The ship was designed and built to comply with the requirements of the RMRS Rules, Class notation: KM EO1 A1. In 2001 the Buyer ordered the design of modified ship with folding-type hatch covers and different cranes. Construction of ships was started in China, where all documentation was sent by e-mail. In 2003-2004 two vessels “CITY” and “MANCHESTER” were constructed.

Throughout the whole time of existence we completely designed and the shipyards constructed more than 500 vessels according to 60 projects. Here only the most complicated and interesting designs developed by the PJSC “Chernomorsudoproject” are mentioned. Many designs of the dry cargo ships, reefer ships, bulk carriers, tankers and other (not mentioned here) ships were also developed in our Design Office. You can take a closer look at all ships designed by the PJSC “Chernomorsudoproject” on the page “Completed projects”.
